Party Planning Tips for Teen Parties
Thirteen is a "milestone" year. You will be lucky if your child will "let" you throw a party. Let your child select the party theme and the party's location.
Remember, this party is for your child, so let your teen make the plans, and give them some space during the party.
This is also a good time to host coed parties with children from school, including both your child's female and male friends.
Sweet sixteen is yet another milestone. It is important to supervise the gathering, but make sure you stay in the background and let your child have fun with their friends.
If the celebration is not a surprise, then involve your teenager in all the planning stages. They will likely have a completely different idea of what they would like.
Be realistic about the budget. It is an important milestone, but it is not necessary to break the bank.
Keep your teen's interests in mind. what would make them feel "grown-up" within legal limits?
Make it clear to your teenager that there are limits. Tell them that you will be present at the party, but that you will stay behind the scenes. This is a time when teenagers think that they are all "grown up", and this may lead to trouble. It is your responsibility to
chaperon the party.
You can avoid confrontation by giving your teenager acceptable limits. Let them know what you won't tolerate, such as alcohol, drugs or couples sneaking off to separate rooms.
Since this is a teenage crowd, entertainment may involve a DJ, or at least music your teen and friends choose.
Make sure there is plenty of food and refreshments that are suited to your child's and the guest's tastes.
Since teens love to pose for the camera, consider giving disposable cameras to each of the party guests. You will have pictures of the event, and your teen and friends will also have their own special memories, without the intrusion or pressure of posing for the camera.
