How to Create a Chic and Affordable Christmas or New Year Party
Why not try an unusual party theme this holiday season that can be implemented without breaking the bank for your guests and you? All it takes is a little creativity! If you're going to be hosting a holiday party, here are some tips for keeping the costs down, while still allowing you to create an event no one will ever forget:
New Ways to Approach Holiday Party Themes
For adults, save money by throwing a re-gifting and recycling party. Most people can locate at least one item they've received that they don't want, so why not have them wrap them up and give them again? Make sure to let them know who is coming to the party, though, so people don't bring gifts they got from someone who'll be at the party. If you don't want to risk hurt feelings, people can just bring impulse purchases they made but have never used. The presents should be limited to a dollar amount that's appropriate for the group, so that everyone can participate and go home with a gift. Another spin on this idea is to have everyone print free holiday gift certificate blanks, bring them to the party and then use names in a festive holiday bowl to decide who will give the gift certificates to whom. Once the names have been chosen, each guest fills in the blank with a free gift they're willing to give, such as walking a dog, mowing a lawn or cooking a gourmet meal. This idea obviously works best with a small group of people who know each other pretty well.
For a kids Christmas or Hanukkah party, the guests can bring low-cost items that would be appropriate for a homeless shelter that serves families or a local pet rescue organization. If you call the organization's manager, you can get a list of low-cost items you can recommend to your guests. Instruct them to wrap the items as if they were regular holiday gifts and then everyone can go as a group to deliver them. Doing this would be a meaningful experience for everyone and would also teach the children the true meaning of the holidays.
Make Your Own Holiday Party Decorations and Invitations
The Web is full of a huge assortment of free printable holiday invitations for both adults and kids. So why waste your money on store-bought invitations when printing them at home is so easy and inexpensive? There are also a lot of Christmas images on the Web, many of which would make ideal party decorations. If you can find high resolution art, you can make banners or signs. If not, you can at least use smaller art to make table place holders or to cut out and sprinkle throughout flower arrangements or plants. If your guests like vintage art, try printing and cutting out various vintage holiday cards and attach them to a string that you drape around the room or the buffet table. This will create an old-time feel and make the room look beautiful! To enhance the shabby chic, vintage holiday theme, get mismatched plates, glasses and silverware at a thrift store to use in place of plastic and paper party ware.
The most important thing to remember when trying to plan a budget-conscious winter holiday event is that you need to be creative. If you implement even the most low-cost ideas with style, no one will ever know the party was actually a bargain! The economy may not be that great right now but that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice fun and style when it comes to throwing Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year parties.
