How the Christmas Card Turned into the Holiday Card

December 10, 2009 · Posted in Holiday Parties

Political correctness has become very important as of late, but it is difficult to say which traditions should be changed.  The exchanging of Christmas cards is a quite enjoyable part of the holiday season to millions of people worldwide.

In recent years, however, the 'Christmas card' has been referred to as the 'holiday card'. One must look at the motives behind this change to understand why this has happened.

In most other situations, 'politically correct' terms have come from situations where a certain group of the population has become offended.  While there is absolutely no place in this world for any racism or stereotyping, many people question whether society has moved too far in the direction of caution.

Many religions do not celebrate Christmas and participants in these faiths may not appreciate receiving any such cards.  However, corresponding with friends, associates and loved ones is not something people want to be excluded from, so perhaps this is one reason for the 'holiday card.'

Approximately 20% of holiday cards have images or text depicting religious views.  It is interesting to note that many cards that say 'Merry Christmas' do not contain any biblical references or images, which make some to wonder if Christmas is no longer seen as quite the religious time it once was.

It is also interesting that while many holiday cards have scriptural passages from the bible, they do not mention the holiday of 'Christmas'.

There are also multiple other holidays that occur near the end of the year. Such holidays include Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year's, and even Thanksgiving.  These are other reasons to correspond with family and clients.  Perhaps this is another reason that the 'Christmas card' turned into the 'Holiday card.'

From a marketing standpoint, many greeting card companies have chosen to simply advertise their products as generic holiday cards.  In today's legal environment, an organization must ensure that they are always deemed acceptable by societal standards.

Also, to avoid these consequences, wise marketers are realizing they can increase their potential client base and choose to refer to holiday cards instead of Christmas cards.  And, because greeting card companies are able to reach worldwide consumers through the use of the Internet, they must make their products more generic.

The one thing everyone can agree upon is that all people enjoy correspondence from others through the year.  Most recipients appreciate cards in the mail no matter if they are called Christmas cards or holiday cards.

The risk of offending anyone is relatively low as long as the content is appropriate for the recipient.  There are some who will always call them Christmas cards.  This is probably more of a tradition than a willingness to offend.
